World Champions Collection - The Girls

Last year, Umbro’s England home shirt introduced a revolutionary tailoring philosophy to the world of football, combining the latest in technology with a classic, stylish design.

This year, we’re spreading that philosophy around the world. As the world’s gaze settles on South Africa this summer, we’re using that iconic England shirt as a canvas. We’ve created a range of special shirts that celebrates each of the seven nations that have earned the right to wear a star on their shirt to mark their victories on the global stage.

We haven’t just slapped their name on the shirt though. Just as we got the best English tailors and designers to create our national shirt, we’ve gone to each of the seven countries involved and picked the finest creative minds to work with. A mixture of  graffiti artists, cartoonists, tattoo designers, record label owners, illustrators and club night innovators have been hand picked to represent their countries by redesigning their national crest. Each of the resulting crests has a fascinating story behind it, exploring the cultures and stories that shape the national identity of the country in question.

World Champions Collection - The Original Advert

We didn’t stop there though. We also wanted a great way to show off these fantastic designs, and found our inspiration whilst leafing through the Umbro archives. We found this cheeky bit of marketing from the Sixties (above), with a range of girls modelling Umbro shirts as fashionable dresses. We thought it’d be the perfect inspiration for the World Champions Collection, which combines heritage and modern culture perfectly.

So, we got stunning girls from each of the countries involved to pose in the shirts for us, and got legendary photographer Rankin to snap the pictures for us. Rankin has photographed some of the most glamorous people around the world, here’s what he had to say about the idea behind Umbro’s World Champions Collection:

“I thought the idea of creating a modern interpretation of the Umbro advert from the sixties was an interesting concept. The girls in the campaign all look stunning and they were a pleasure to work with. I’m extremely pleased with the results.”

We’re sure you’ll agree that the results are pretty impressive! The shirts are available now, check out Umbro.com for details of where you can get your hands on them. If you want to see more of the photoshoot and the girls that we’ve chosen, check out this behind the scenes video:

Want to read more about each of the crests and the girls involved? Each day over the next two weeks we’ll be having an in-depth look at each country, the crest that’s been designed, and the story behind it, starting tomorrow with two-time winners Uruguay. If you head over to Umbro.com, you can find out where these shirts are going to be available, whilst you can also download wallpapers and screensavers featuring the crests and the girls wearing the World Champions Collection shirts. For now, here’s a closer look at each of the amazing crests that have been designed:

I love them! I saw them on Facebook a few days ago and I was impressed both by the kits and the women!

I’m glad I get to see Uruguay be part of such an incredible and nice project. After the series is done -or as soon as I can get good pics- I will post this over at TSC. BTW, will this be available here in South America? I never get to see, or buy, any of the good stuff I see over here at the Umbro blog…

BTW, I don’t think dating Forlán makes Zaira Nara Uruguayan! I’m glad such a beautiful girl represents us on this, but we do have Uruguayan-born beauties… :P
