Sunderland Home 2010/11: Tailored by Umbro
As they look forward to another season of success in the Premier League, Sunderland are very excited to reveal their new home kit, Tailored by Umbro for the 2010/11 season.
Like the recently revealed away kit, Sunderland’s new home strip has been crafted using the smart, stylish look that has inspired all of Umbro’s current designs for its top clubs.
In Sunderland’s traditional red and white stripes, the home shirt is constructed from 100% polyester, making it lightweight and breathable for players on the pitch. A mesh-vent seam under the arm aids this ventilation.
There’s a modern touch to the Black Cats’ classic stripes, with a ‘zig zag’ warp knit design, while the shirt features a turn down collar for increased comfort. The level of craft involved in the new Sunderland shirt can be seen in the club crest, which is embroidered directly onto the garment rather than via a transfer.
So what do you Sunderland fans think? We’d love to hear what you have to say about both your home and away shirts for 2010/11. For more pictures and to pre-order the shirt, head over to the Sunderland site.

Why would a team that wear a red and white home kit have a white away kit that clashes with it?
Too much time “tailoring” and not enough time thinking Umbro.

Like the Home top, could off been better with a larger collar, Otherwise nice shirt,
the Away shirt though is a disgrace we have been cast aside with the use of a shit template which is exactly the same as Blackburns away shirt, and probably countless other efforts that your piss designers probably spent all of 5 mins doing, Awful effort UMBRO :@

could have done with an “england” collar like instead of this little flap.
these kits are branded as “tailored” range but they arent unique so im lost on that one, i saw blackburn (yes, blackburn) have he same base design.
overall this is nice but could have been better, was hoping for more.

Hi Aaron, firstly I have to say I really like the design of the home strip; it’s a nice classic-looking shirt and it’s great to see return to the red socks with white turn-ups, which were a feature of our best kits over the last 40 years. The kit is reminiscent of the Umbro range of kits we had in the 1970s. However I’m disappointed again with the choice of material. This is the second season in a row that Man City and England seem to be getting what in my opinion is ‘superior quality’ kit. Man City seem to be getting the better deal of all the club teams Umbro now manufacture kits for. Both England kits are also of superior quality in terms of material. Why should other teams like ourselves, Blackburn etc. have to ‘make do’ when you quite clearly put extra effort into Man City and England due to them having longer contracts with you? The training wear that Man City had last season was exceptional and again with our own training wear last season, as with the kits, Sunderland et al had to do with the basic range. Also, why do Man City and England get the actual ‘Tailored’ fitting kits – 34/36/38 inch sizes etc. – when other teams are getting the basic S/M/L sizing? If we’re paying for a new strip every year when most teams in the Premier League have the luxury of only changing their strip every two years then I would expect these little gripes to be sorted out should our contract with Umbro continue. The away strip is another talking point amongst our fans as there are issues with the colour. Why have a predominately white away shirt when we have a chance of having a colour clash with certain teams? Some reserach into classic Sunderland kits of the past would have thrown up the idea of having a blue away kit. In the past our kit was supplied by Umbro and a reimagining of the navy blue 1978 away kit, made famous by a certain Gary Rowell’s hat-trick against Newcastle, would have gone down extremely well with our fans. Sales would have been far stronger than for the burgundy/white colour scheme; I’m certain. Feedback on the issues I’ve brought up would be really appreciated. Umbro have come a long way in the past two seasons with their designs and as I’ve already said, the work you’re doing with England and Man City is fantastic. The kits and training wear you’ve designed has been amazing and the effort you’re putting into re-working classic kits from the past is paying off in increased sales from the public. The Man City kit from last season is the best club football kit I’ve ever seen. I’d just love to be able to make that comment about my own team’s kit…
Your feedback on the above issues would be greatly appreciated. Keep up the good work

Paul: some good points there, not sure if you will get answers though. I’d imagine some of the reason is because City and England sell a lot more replicas than Sunderland and Blackburn perhaps.
I thought I’d correct you on one point though – as it stands currently, only 4 Premier League teams keep their kits for two seasons (and often they disregard that rule by bringing out “commemorative” one year designs). Those four are Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United and (possibly not any longer since their move to Puma) Newcastle. The vast majority of PL clubs bring out two or three new kits every season.

Hi everyone,
First of all, thanks to everyone for getting in touch with your concerns and comments on the new Sunderland kit and all our other shirts.
I’m hoping to sit down with our product team next week to get some definitive answers for some of your questions, hopefully that should clear some things up for you.
I can answer some concerns now though – these kits are ‘tailored’ in the sense that they’re shaped and inspired by the unique history of each team. Our designers spend a lot of time researching each club and crafting the kits around what they find. This then has to fit with the club’s traditional colours, league rules and what the club themselves are looking for, so it’s a difficult balance to find.
I’ll hopefully be able to answer more questions after speaking to the team, but if you’ve any questions you’d like me to ask, please submit them here.
