In The City: the music world arrives in Manchester
Manchester can claim to be a healthy centre of music at the best of times, but that suggestion goes into overdrive at this time of year. That’s because In The City rolls into town, a conference/gig-o-thon that brings around 300 bands and plenty of music biz execs into the city. Established 18 years ago by Tony Wilson and Yvette Livesey, ITC has become one of the biggest events in the musical world, playing a key role in the early careers of Oasis, Arctic Monkeys and The Darkness (but don’t let that put you off!)
But what does that mean for the regular music fan in Manchester? Well, you might not be interested in the conferences and all the business talk going on, but you will be interested in all the gigs going on from now until Tuesday. Some are free, some will need an ITC pass – see the website for details.
Here’s some bands that we think will be worth checking out:
Impressive rapper from Manchester, already appeared at the MOBOs and had a single of the week on Radio 1.
Playing Moho Live Tue 10.30pm
Arty indie-rockers who have made the north-west their home. If the Northern Quarter had a soundtrack, they’d be playing it.
Trof tonight at 8pm, Night & Day on Tue at 8.40pm
Hotly-tipped, barely out of school, and dividing opinions left right and centre. Either way, it’s worth catching them now just to discover what the fuss is all about.
Chicago Rock Cafe on Tue at 9.30pm
Old-fashioned indie rock and roll, what Manchester does best, but with a healthy does of youthful swagger.
Dry Bar on Tue at 8.45pm
Anyone else you think we should check out? Let us know…
