New England Shirt 2012: inspired by St George, Tailored by Umbro
We recently revealed that the new England kit would be on sale next week, but we didn’t really tell you anything about it – until now! This is the new England 2012 home shirt, which will be worn by the senior squad for the first time next week as they take on Holland at Wembley, and the U21s as they face Belgium. So what’s so special about it? Here’s some insight into the new England home shirt, Tailored by Umbro.
First of all, this is the first time ever that the England shirt has been purely red and white. That’s tied into the main inspiration behind the new England shirt – that most symbolic notion of Englishness, the St. George’s flag. The red and white of the English flag are the key components of the new home shirt, with the red England crest proudly embroidered on the chest, alongside the iconic Umbro double diamond.
Probably the most eye-catching part of the new England home shirt is the collar. Featuring a smart, one button fastener, the collar is inspired by the look of a traditional shirt. With the collar down, players and fans will have a subtle dash of red along the top, recalling the flag of England’s patron saint. Under the collar, a more detailed stripe is revealed, which has been inspired by Sir Alf Ramsey’s iconic 1966 jacket and the St George’s flag, developed by Umbro into this tonal red design.
Technically, the new shirt is crafted from a cotton/polyester blended material, which offers terrific comfort, movement and fit. The shirt also features front body darting and a lowered back hem, giving fans and players a better fit and a smarter look, whether you’re playing or watching the game.
It’s a smart new look for England as they look forward to this summer’s big tournament, inspired by the most iconic symbol of Englishness there is – the St. George’s flag. The new shirt will on sale from February 29th, pre-order it now at Umbro.com.

good to see Umbro still can’t spell Jack Wilshere’s name properly in some of their other posts as well.

Red!!!!!. No blue!!! I defo won’t be buying that and do umbro realise how many supporters they have alienated!

looks terrible! no thought has really gone into that at all. looks boring, uninspiring and plain. I’d rather see the 2000/2002 goalkeeper kit worn by david seaman, ok maybe not but you get my point.

poor! your kits are so dated and rank! the fit is awful, design awful! as bland as the team that plays in it! bring out a simple, fitted sleve shirt like nike and adidas do! forget the shocking collar, a nice smart v neck, and whats with the 1962 style button! poor show!

Crap, looks like a £10 white polo shirt you can buy from Matalans with an England badge embroidered on andwill sell for a retail price of £40. I could get my own one made up as good quality for £15.

The all red badge is a very tacky feature. Shame as the rest of the kit looks nice. The lions should have been blue at least.

I think its missing blue, and looks ugly without it, maybe to the point of making the other team we are playing sick and we may win something. lol

Good to see St. Georges colours. Blue on the shirt has brought nothing but bad luck so the change to white and red is good, and more traditional. We should stick to blue shorts though. Out with the old, in with the new with the kit….let’s hope the new manager (whoever he is) does the same with the squad. We need a chance to be successful.

Thank God the horrible multicoloured crosses on the back are gone! The England kit should resemble the colours of the English flag: red and white. I’m glad someone at Umbro finally worked that out, well done!
On 24 Feb 2012, at 12:36 am Chris Davies wrote:
I am delighted with this kit, it is a difficult scenario for Umbro to win as after the last kit people called for the red colour of the St George cross rather than “Scottish” blue design. And so here we are! Not blue, no multi-coloured little crosses to symbolise multi-cultralism, just red and white for every culture to wear with pride, now that is English!

Hi Dean,
The numbers will be seen in the game next week
The shorts will be white, with a change colour of red
The socks will be white with a red trim
The away kit is staying the same
Thanks for your questions
