Back Of The Net: the finest football things on the web this week

Here we are in 2010, and plenty has happened since we last turned our attention to football on the world wide web – managers changing teams, clubs not paying their players, games snowed off and a deluge of dodgy transfer rumours – and of course, some actual football matches being played at some point in between!
For those players who have been snowed off, perhaps they should take some inspiration from their Eastern European cousins. As this clip over at Off The Post shows, a bit of snow isn’t going to keep the Estonian team off the pitch, even for a match that was just a friendly. It’s often said that the pitch can be a great leveller, in this case it’s a great flattener.
It’s looking like there’s not going to be any football played this weekend, which isn’t much of a laughing matter. Happily, there is one guaranteed football match here in Manchester – because it’s indoors. The Manchester Futsal Club kick off their season with a match against Middlesbrough on Sunday, one of a series of fixtures up and down the country that won’t be snowed off. If you want to check out if there’s a Futsal match to watch near you, take a look at the website here.
On a more serious note, the opening of the transfer window has no doubt got fans and even the players excited, but as this blog over at Two Footed Tackle points out, sometimes big moves aren’t the best thing for a player. Looking at Tom Twaito – who was the subject of a highly controversial move from Leeds to Chelsea – the piece makes an interesting point that, sometimes, it’s better to stay in the lower leagues until you’re really ready to make the move upwards.
Last weekend, one of the best moments of the football season took place – the FA Cup third round. There were a couple of upsets – Leeds at Manchester United being the biggest – in the round where the Cup really kicks off for most people. Not for intrepid blogger Tricky however, who has been with the cup from the start. His Road To Wembley blog finds Tricky attempting to watch a game in every round from the preliminary qualifying stage to the final, and has so far seen him take in visits to clubs such as Sheffield FC, Fleetwood and Buxton, taking some great pictures along the way.
In the Football League, things are beginning to take shape as the divisions head towards their second half conclusions. Plenty of people have had their say on who’s impressed so far and who they think will go on to get promoted, but one of the most insightful we’ve seen so far is this blog from former player Matt Holland over on the Football League website. He only mentions the Championship, but Holland obviously knows what he’s talking about.
Clips of footballers doing funny things are always popular – you only have to watch an episode of Soccer AM or MOTD2 to see that. The team over at We Don’t Know Football have unearthed a great video that brings together almost all the silly moments of 2009 in one handy package. Full of dodgy dives and some terrible misses, it sets a tough challenge to 2010 to be as funny. (Audio NSFW).
And that’s all from this week’s Back Of The Net, apart from a brief explanation of that strange photo at the top of the page. Some of Umbro’s staff are over in Tokyo at the moment, and spotted this unusual sign telling us to keep our high heels off the pitch – that’s a boot design that’s not really taken off with players over here so far!

Haha, I’m from Estonia and I remember watching that game on tv. Wasn’t the prettiest of games, I can assure you that.
Loving my Black/White/Silver Specialis by the way.
