Rangers Home Shirt: the spirit of ’72

Umbro Rangers 2012/13 Home Shirt

Forty years on from one of their greatest victories, Rangers have used their 1972 triumph as the inspiration for a smart new home shirt, Tailored by Umbro. In 1972, Rangers beat Dynamo Moscow 3-2 in the European Cup Winner’s Cup Final, held at the Nou Camp in Barcelona, marking themselves out as one of the finest teams in a generation.

Umbro Rangers 2012/13 Home Shirt

Now, Rangers have used that famous moment as the inspiration for their latest stylish kit. The new Rangers home kit, which will be worn by the Glasgow club throughout the 2012/13 season, has a clean, classic look, with an enlarged club crest embroidered on the chest, above the sponsor’s logo.

Umbro Rangers 2012/13 Home Shirt

On the backneck label, 1972 has been stitched into the shirt, to inspire both players and fans as they wear the kit. On the hem, 5 silver stars are stitched alongside the Tailored by Umbro insignia, representing the 50 league championships won by Rangers, Scotland’s most successful club ever.

While the shirt has been inspired by the past, it’s certainly crafted using the latest design innovations. In a lightweight material, the shirt features breathable mesh fabric on the underarm and a comfortable square crew neck collar. Combined with smart white shorts and red socks with a white trim, we think the whole kit will be sure to be popular with Rangers fans around the world – it’ll be on sale from 24th May from the Umbro website.

Neo 2: a closer look at our special new football

FA Cup Neo 2 Pro Football

Footballs – they’re round, full of air, and you kick them into the back of the net. That’s all there is to it, isn’t it? Well, in one way, it is – but there’s a lot of thought and innovation that goes into the creation of a football that does exactly what it should do. With the Umbro Neo 2 ball set to be used for the first time this Saturday in the FA Cup Final between Liverpool and Chelsea, it’s probably a good time to look at exactly how our footballs are constructed.

The Neo 2, as its name suggests, is an evolution of the original Neo ball, which has been used throughout the FA Cup this season. Throughout its use in the competition, our designers worked with the footballers that were playing with the ball to get their opinions on how well it worked. As their feedback was overwhelmingly positive, we knew that we didn’t need to change too much about the Neo, just adapt it to fit with the latest in design innovation.

That’s why the unique 14-panel TPU outer casing, which gives a faster, truer flight of the ball and a larger strike zone has been retained, but a special new graphic has been created which helps players to understand the speed and spin of the ball. (TPU, by the way, stands for Thermoplastic Polyuerthane, in case you were wondering…)

As well as helping players see it better, the graphic printed onto the Neo 2 is also indebted to the unique culture of the FA Cup – our designers were inspired by the lettering on this certificate given to the Cup’s founder CW Alcock, which is now the property of the National Football Museum. Just another example of how football’s culture and history can be combined with the very latest in design to create something special!

Underneath that outer casing, the Neo 2 features a high density foam lining which helps the ball to keep its shape and maintain a natural level of bounce. Under that is the bladder, made of natural rubber in order to be durable but lightweight, given how much force will be used to whack the ball around Wembley on Saturday evening.

So, while for players and fans a ball can seem like just a ball, and it’s important that you can just concentrate on your game during an important match, underneath all that there’s a lot going on! Something to think about when you see the Neo 2 nestling in the corner of the net in a few days time…

Don’t forget that you can still enter our competition to win tickets to Saturday’s game over on Facebook, where you’ll also get the chance to present the Neo 2 matchball to the referee. Head over now to enter…

Joe Hart talks Manchester City, fans and new kits on derby day

Ahead of tonight’s massive Manchester derby, we took the opportunity to speak to City’s man between the sticks, Joe Hart. After recently putting in some fantastic performances for his club, starring in our Show Your City video and celebrating his 25th birthday, we caught Joe having a rare break from the game, walking his dog. Here’s what he had to say on tonight’s game, City’s fans and his time as head boy…

It seems like the whole of Manchester is looking forward to the derby, but are the players trying to treat it as ‘just another game’?

‘It’s not a normal game, it’s a big game. But every game has been big this year. With this one, with everyone having a week to look forward to it and all the build up, it should be interesting, but we’ve just got to concentrate on getting the three points and getting to the top of the league.’

You mention a lot of tough games, but do any stand out?

‘They’ve all been tough – I know that’s a bit of a clichéd thing to say, but it’s true. Our last two games, Norwich away, Wolves away, they’ve both been incredibly tough. United obvious are one of the best teams around, but we’ve got to put ourselves up there as well. Nearly every game this season we’ve been the team that people want to beat, so with United being top of the league, it’ll be nice for us to be challenging them, and it should be interesting.’

You must be pleased to be included in the PFA Team Of The Year?

‘It’s difficult with the PFA player nominations, because the nominates are made earlier in the season, it’s an honour to be chosen though and I hope to do it justice over the last few games of this season. Personally, I voted for Van Persie as Player Of The Year, Tim Krul as Young Player, and I voted for Michel Vorm as the goalkeeper in my team of the year. I definitely wanted to vote for both Vorm and Krul, not just because I’m a keeper, I genuinely think they’ve both been two of the best players in the league this season.’

As a goalkeeper, do you think about keeping clean sheets in the same way a striker might think about getting a hat trick?

‘Definitely, it’s a thing we’ve got to pride ourselves on, it’s our job on the pitch. We’ve got 15 in the league this season, and we should have comfortably had at least 20. So it’s something we want to improve, something we’re not happy with and something we definitely want to do more on.’

The fans will obviously have a big job to do in Monday’s match, what difference have they made this season?

‘The fans at City really are something else. This season at home it has been difficult at times because teams have come along, put eleven men behind the ball, and it’s hard for them to get excited about that. But when the games have come alive – Tottenham, Chelsea, Sporting Lisbon, and I’m sure against United on Monday – when it gets like that there’s no better place to play. You almost feel as if the fans are going to drag the ball into the net with the sheer force of their support. If that atmosphere is created, it helps us massively.’

You came close to scoring in that game against Lisbon – if you had the choice, would you rather grab a goal or save a penalty?

‘It’s got to be saving a penalty – if I’m up in the opposition penalty area for any reason then it’s never going to be a good thing. I never want to be up there, if I can ever help it.’

What about in a shoot out, would you take one?

‘100 million percent, I’ve always said I’d take one!’

We were reading up on some facts about you when you were younger. Is it true you were a bit of a cricket star?

‘Yeah, I was a left-arm seam bowler, winged it down as fast as I could basically. There was never a choice between football and cricket though, I was always miles better at football.’

Apparently, you were the winner of the darts competition in the England camp at the World Cup, is that true?

‘I definitely didn’t win, I know that for a fact! We did play though, we were out in Rustenburg and we didn’t have much to do, darts was one of the ways we liked to pass the time. We didn’t even play proper darts though, it was darts golf, so it was never very serious, but I did enjoy it.’

Final rumour about you, is it true that you were head boy at your school?

‘I was, I don’t know how I ended up doing it be honest. I was labelled the worst head boy at one point! I always got on well with people, I wasn’t a grade-A student by any stretch of the imagination, but I suppose I was quite responsible, I did well at sport, so maybe that’s why. I had absolutely no duties though, I got a nice badge and then lost it within a week. There was a very good head girl who knew what she was doing, so I just followed her lead!’

A lot of the other City players are involved in projects outside the game, like fashion or their own charity fundraising. Is that something you’d like to be more involved in?

‘I like supporting people to be honest, a few of the lads like to do their own things but I just like playing football if I’m honest. I’m always happy to turn up and give my support, but football takes up all my time. ‘

It was your 25th birthday recently, did you get chance to celebrate?

‘My parents came up to visit, but that was about it. I’m not a big fan of celebrating my own birthday if I’m honest, I much prefer other peoples. Presents-wise, I got a head cover for my golf clubs, not very exciting!’

We’ve recently revealed the Show Your City videos that you star in, are you worried about what the fans might come up with for launching the City kit?

No, bring it on man! I’ll be interested to see what people come up with. We do some great stuff at City to get involved with the fans, and they get to see us and see what we’re really like.’

Finally, who’s the most famous person in your phone, that’s not a footballer?

‘Erm….my mum!’

Thanks to Joe for taking the time to speak to us – if you want to launch the new Manchester City kits, make sure you head over to www.umbro.com/mcfc now. Like the look of Joe’s Geometra Pro gloves? Find out more about them over at the Umbro website.

St George Collection: a fresh look for our top gloves

All week we’ve been introducing you to the St George Collection, a special range inspired by England’s patron saint and Umbro’s unique football insight, headed up by a new look for our iconic football boots. Today we wanted to introduce you to another part of the collection we’re looking forward to seeing on the pitch this summer, the Geometra Pro Touch goalkeeper gloves.

With Joe Hart establishing himself as England’s number one recently, we’ll be sure to see him wearing this special St George Collection pair of gloves when he steps into action this summer. Crafted to the highest standard, the Geometra Pro Touch gloves have been created in conjunction with keepers like Joe to give them what they want from their football equipment.

So, we’ve improved the grip on the Geometra Pro Touch gloves by 15%, whilst still making sure they’re comfortable and crafted from a breathable mesh material. A double-barrel palm construct makes catching and distribution easier, while the structured punch zone keeps your hands protected. With the same red striping detail found throughout the St George Collection, these goalkeeper gloves also help to present a unified look across the whole England team as they look for success this summer.

Of course, you can’t have much success on a football pitch without a great ball, and that’s why we’ve got two great footballs at the heart of the St George Collection. Set to be used in England’s pre-tournament home fixture in June, the England Neo 2 Pro ball takes the colours of the St George Collection onto Umbro’s finest ball yet. Crafted to meet the demands of the game at the highest level, the ball is technologically sophisticated and comes complete with the England crest proudly emblazoned on the side. We’ll have more details on this innovative ball, and where else you might see it, soon.

Adding a splash of colour to any game of football, we’ve also created the St George Collection trainer ball. Using the special red tonal striping created by Umbro from the St George’s flag, the trainer ball is an ideal way to show your support for England this summer even while you’re in the midst of a game.

Inspired by St George, Tailored by Umbro, all these items will be on sale at Umbro.com from 4th May.
