A Decade Of Kits: the final

This poll has now closed, you’ll have to wait until tomorrow morning to discover who the winner is…
So here we are: after a month of blogs, over 100 shirts, and over 2,500 votes cast, we’re down to the final three in our search for the best Umbro kit of the past decade. We’ve said enough about each of these finalists already, so all we’ll say now is that you have until midnight on Wednesday to vote for your favourite, with the winner being announced on Christmas Eve. Want your favourite to be voting as Umbro’s kit of the decade? Well get voting!

The Morecambe kit is an off-the-peg template and not a particularly good one either. The City kit is the best club kit in the league at the moment and their other current kits are great too (and that’s club allegiences apart), but they are basically variations on a theme of the England kit.
All the work on materials, cut and fit went into that England kit and was then incorporated into the new City kits. The City kits also have an ugly sponsors logo that upsets the pure design ethic of the shirt as a whole (and that’s not to mention the ridiculous current club crest).
The refined crest (without the redundant “England” script that blighted previous shirts), the subtle white star and the barely visable crest and logo on the shorts are master-strokes. Because of all that, I have to say that, in my opinion, it is Umbro’s finest kit this decade.

How can any Man City fan complain about Morecambe as an off the peg template – look at your own kit – oh yeah and how much does it cost to be 6th in the league

On 23 Dec 2009, at 5:25 pm Tim wrote:
Erm, I’m not a City fan Paul (as I noted in my previous post).
The Morcambe kit was basically a generic teamwear kit as worn by lots of other clubs at the time. Nothing stylish or original about it, and if it were not for the fact that a Morcambe forum had picked up on these polls it wouldn’t be in the running.
The poll is supposed to be about which kit design is the best, not who is your favourite team, isn’t it? City certainly aren’t my favourite team, but I think they have a better kit, so it’s not impossible to be objective.
The City kit is not a standard template kit and is not worn by any other club (at least not currently). As for the price of being 6th in the league, I believe it’s somewhere in the region of £250m.
On 23 Dec 2009, at 6:05 pm Glen Cooper wrote:
That City kit is a very ordinary, mundane kit. ‘Not standard template’? it’s as standard as it’s possible to be in design terms.
The Morecambe one – who else wore that?
It just looks better.
And, if City hadn’t picked up on this on Bluemoon, that wouldn’t have got many votes. If City didn’t have thousands of times as many fans as we have then we wouldn’t have to resort to calling for support on our forum to get a fair contest.
Without the possibility of us marshalling support in this way then we may as well just give up and let the ‘big’ teams win anything that relies on a vote. It’s our only way of fighting back and letting the underdog have a chance so don’t talk about it like it’s a terrible thing, Tim.
