Umbro Around The World – part 2

Del339702

Here’s the second part of our round-up, looking at the success of Umbro-sponsored teams around the world.

Japan

Yasuhito Endo (pictured above), a midfielder for the Umbro-sponsored team Gamba Osaka, was voted Asian Footballer Of The Year. He has played more than 250 games for his club, and scored more than 60 goals. He also has over 80 caps for the Japanese national team, scoring 7 goals for them.

Northern Ireland

At a gala evening in Belfast, Cliftonville FC’s striker Chris Scannell was recognised as the Top Goal scorer the IFA Premiership. The Footballer of the Year award went to Crusaders FC ’s captain Colin Coates.

Peru

In the championship play-off in Peru, Universitario followed up their 1-0 defeat of old rivals Alianza Lima in the first leg with an identical result in the second. Veteran midfielder Nolberto Solano (a Peruvian and Umbro legend who will be familiar to many of us) sparked jubilant scenes at the Estadio Monumental in Lima when he converted a penalty to end Universitario’s nine-year title drought.

According to the International Federation of Football History and Statistics, an international organization recognized by FIFA, Universitario was the best Peruvian club of the 20th century and the 28th most successful South America.

Poland

Slawomir Peszko won the award for Midfielder of the Year 2009 Award in Poland, an award voted by his fellow footballers. Peszko is 24 year old Polish footballer who plays as a midfielder for Lech Poznań. Peszko made his debut for his country in a friendly against Ireland in November 2008.
The Coach of the Year title went to Maciej Skorza, the manager of Wisla Krakow, the current Polish Champions.

Thailand

Thai Port FC won the Thailand FA Cup Final 2009. Based in Khlong Toei district of central Bangkok, Thai Port F.C are one of the most successful clubs in Thai Football history, having won the Kor Royal Cup 8 times, and the Queen’s Cup 6 times.

Uruguay

Uruguay’s title holders Nacional won the Apertura championship with a game to spare after a 1-0 win over Fenix in the penultimate round. Defender Alvaro Gonzalez scored the only goal in the 55th minute of Thursday night’s match to put Nacional out of reach, five points clear of Liverpool and Defensor Sporting.

Nacional had already qualified for Libertadores 2010 Cup back in July and with last night’s triumph has also qualified to play as Uruguay 1 in the next edition of the Copa Sudamericana, so we will have Nacional play both South American Cups during 2010.

Congratulations once again to all these Umbro teams and players, and here’s to plenty more success in 2010!

Umbro Around The World – part 1

Brazil

Umbro is probably best know for producing kits for England and a host of Premiership clubs, something which we’re understandably very proud of. However, we also provide kits for a massive amount of teams and players around the world – here’s a little insight into some of the success these teams have had over the last year.

Argentina

Colón de Santa Fé have qualified for only the second time in its entire history to the Copa Libertadores de America. They clinched a place in this competition after a 1 – 0 victory against Estudiantes de la Plata, with the only goal scored by striker Federico Nieto.

The last time that Colón qualified for the most important competition in South America was in the year 1998, and they were also sponsored by Umbro at the time. On that occasion they were eliminated in the quaterfinals. Esteban Fuertes, an Umbro sponsored player, top scorer in the history of the club, was the captain of the team in 1998, and remarkably he’s still captain today.

Brazil

Diego Souza of Palmeiras (pictured above, centre) has been voted the best player in the Brazilian League. Also among the other nominees for the prize was Cleiton Xavier, Souza’s team mate at Palmeiras. Both of these players are sponsored by Umbro Brazil and had the honour of being called up for the Canarinha, the Brazilian National Team, this year.

Columbia

On the 18th November, Independiente Santa Fe won the Copa Colombia, their first major trophy in 20 years, beating Deportivo Pasto on penalties in a thrilling final. Pasto had won the first leg 2-1, but with the same result for Santa Fe in the return match played at Bogotá’s El Campin stadium, the match went into a shoot out. Santa Fe’s subsequent victory was their first trophy since their Copa Colombia victory in 1989, giving them a direct entry into next year’s Copa Sudamericana representing Colombia.

Ecuador

LDU Quito won their second South American club trophy in successive seasons despite a 3-0 defeat by Fluminense of Brazil in the second leg of the Copa Sudamericana final at the Maracana. LDU, Libertadores Cup winners when they beat the same rivals in the final in 2008, only just denied Fluminense in what could have been a remarkable comeback from last week’s 5-1 defeat in the first leg in Quito to take the title 5-4 on aggregate. The Copa Sudamericana is South America’s second club championship, equivalent to the Europa League.

LDU Quito are also the current holders of both the Recopa Sudamericana and the Copa Sudamericana after winning the 2009 editions of both tournaments. They’re considered to be the most successful Ecuadorian club in history.

Ireland

Bohemian FC won the Premier League for the second year in a row, and were also victorious in the League Cup. Shamrock Rovers were the league runners-up in their first season in their new home ground in Tallaght Stadium. The Premier Division team of the year featured seven Umbro-sponsored players out of the eleven picked out – Brian Murphy, Brian Shelley, Dan Murray, Conor Powell, Gary Deegan, Raphael Cretaro and Gary Twigg.

Congratulations to all these Umbro-sponsored teams and players. Check back later in the week, when we’ll have news of more Umbro achievements from Uruguay, Peru, Japan, Thailand and Poland…

Seasons Greetings from Umbro

Christmas CardWow, we thought it’d be a quiet time here at Umbro, but with the Caption Competition, the Christmas Giveaway and the final of A Decade Of Kits, it’s been one of our busiest weeks ever!

First things first, thanks for all your contributions to the Caption Competition – we got around 60 in total, which was terrific. We were very impressed with some of the ideas you lot came up with, and we were also very impressed at just how bad some of your puns were! We picked out our two favourites, from Daniel Langhorn and Tim Sinclair, who have both won a pair of Umbro Speciali boots signed by Michael Owen. Their efforts were…

‘Their ‘tackles’ were coming up decidedly short following a cold snap….’

and…

“Some people are on the pitch … they think it’s all over … it is SNOW!”

Make of those what you will!

Second of all, thanks to all your entries into yesterday’s Christmas Give Away. We picked out three favourites for the final round of entries – Dale Henderson’s tale of Bradford’s play off glory, Laura Gibbon’s 2-themed story about her call-up to the England squad, and James Perkins’ unusual take on the number 2. They’ve each picked their prizes from the bulging Umbro goodie bag, and I’m afraid to say that the rest of the prizes are being put back into our high security storage facility.

Finally, we’d just like to say Merry Christmas to everyone, and we hope that there’s some football played in this weather!

A Decade Of Kits: the result

man-city-h-09-10Morecambe07

‘And so this is Christmas, and what have you done?’ The answer for a lot of you will be – vote in your droves for the final of A Decade Of Kits. We’ve been absolutely overwhelmed with the amount of votes we’ve had for this – but we also realise that there was a lot of internet organisation and sneaky skullduggery afoot, from both sides. Morecambe fans, if you’re going to rally your fans through ShrimpsVoices, that’s fine, but getting Man United fans to vote against their rivals City? That’s low. Perhaps you thought you were the Rage Against The Machine to City’s Joe McElderry? One Shrimps fan even sank low enough to admit that “I even claimed to be a …errr… Man Utd supporter. Oh the shame.”

Perhaps you should have asked your United supporting pals to be a bit more subtle about it as well? Posting comments proclaiming their love for United is a bit of a clue that they’re not really voting for the kit that they like! Anyway, at the end of the day it’s only a bit of fun, and we can only commend your powers of persuasion across the internet. So, with no further ado we’d like to announce the winner of A Decade Of Kits, which is…

MORECAMBE!

Yep, as you can see from the results below, the League Two team pulled off the win, by a measly six votes. The kit – which Morecambe wore when they won the Play Offs in 2007, gaining entry to the Football League for the first time in their history – obviously means a lot to Shrimps fans. So congratulations from us all here at Umbro!

Which of these shirts is your Kit Of The Decade?

  • B) Morecambe (47%, 1,135 Votes)
  • C) Manchester City (47%, 1,129 Votes)
  • A) England (6%, 329 Votes)

Total Voters: 2,423

Finally, thanks once again to John Devlin, who provided all the images throughout the Decade Of Kits poll. christmas_giveaway

It’s the Eve of Christmas Eve, and that can only mean one thing…the last day of the Umbro Christmas Giveaway! Thanks once again to everyone who has entered on the two previous days, and congratulations to our winners so far. Today, we want to hear your football stories based around the number 2, seeing as it’s only 2 days until Christmas – bet you didn’t see that coming, did ya? So it could be anything from your favourite ever pair of boots, a duo of players you remember fondly, or the time that you treated yourself to two pies at half time. We’ll pick the ones that we enjoy reading the most, and they’ll get to pick something from our chimney of goodies. A few prizes have gone so far, but the ones we still have left are:

An England away shirt signed by Phil Jagielka

A pair of Umbro Speciali boots signed by Michael Owen

A Sunderland shirt signed by the whole team

A Nottingham Forest shirt signed by the whole team

A Hull City shirt signed by Geovanni

A pair of Umbro Speciali boots signed by Pepe

Umbro’s Christmas Giveaway: Day Two

christmas_giveaway

Thanks to everyone who entered our Christmas giveaway yesterday, we really enjoyed reading your responses – and congratulations to Matt Salmon, who we picked out as the winner. He chose a pair of Specialis signed by Michael Owen, which we’ll get in the post asap.

Today’s question is inspired by the fact that it’s now only 3 days until Christmas (you can see where we’re going with this, can’t you?) All you have to do to be in with a chance of grabbing something from our Christmas pile is tell us a story about you and football that involves the number 3 – it’s the magic number. So it could be about the best hat-trick you’ve ever scored, the reason why you love the traditional 3 o’clock kick-off, or the finest number 3 you’ve seen in your club’s colours. Basically, we want a great story that includes that number in some way, so get typing!

Here’s a reminder of the prizes that are still up for grabs…

An England away shirt signed by John Terry

An England away shirt signed by Phil Jagielka

A pair of Umbro Speciali boots signed by Michael Owen

A Sunderland shirt signed by the whole team

A Nottingham Forest shirt signed by the whole team

A Hull City shirt signed by Geovanni

2 pairs of Umbro Speciali boots signed by Pepe

A pair of goalkeeper gloves signed by Joe Hart

Terms and conditions for the competition are available to read here.

This poll has now closed, you’ll have to wait until tomorrow morning to discover who the winner is…

So here we are: after a month of blogs, over 100 shirts, and over 2,500 votes cast, we’re down to the final three in our search for the best Umbro kit of the past decade. We’ve said enough about each of these finalists already, so all we’ll say now is that you have until midnight on Wednesday to vote for your favourite, with the winner being announced on Christmas Eve. Want your favourite to be voting as Umbro’s kit of the decade? Well get voting!

Umbro’s Christmas Giveaway

christmas_giveaway

You might be feeling a little cheesed off at having to still be in work this week, but here at Umbro we’re trying to make the effort to cheer you up a little bit. We’ve gathered together all the lovely pieces of special Umbro gear around the office, and we’re giving it all away between today and Wednesday. The items that are currently stored in Umbro’s special chimney which you can see above are:

An England away shirt signed by John Terry

An England away shirt signed by Phil Jagielka

2 pairs of Umbro Speciali boots signed by Michael Owen

A Sunderland shirt signed by the whole team

A Nottingham Forest shirt signed by the whole team

A Hull City shirt signed by Geovanni

2 pairs of Umbro Speciali boots signed by Pepe

A pair of goalkeeper gloves signed by Joe Hart

All you have to do to be in with a chance of grabbing some of this gear is send us your best answer to our daily question, and tell us which prize you’d like to receive  – we’ll be giving away two items every day.

Today, our question is inspired by the fact that it’s 4 days until Christmas – we want to know your best football related stories that involve the number 4. Want to tell us about the time you scored 4 goals in a match? Or the time that it took you 4 days to travel to an away match on the other side of the world? Who’s the best number 4 you’ve seen this season? Or what’s the best £4million that’s been spent on a player? We want you to get inventive in the way you tell us your stories, and the best ones will get to pick a prize from our selection. So get thinking, and get posting if you want to be in with a chance of winning…

Terms and conditions for the competition are available to read here.

Christmas At Umbro: the caption competition

Christmas Card

We’re gearing up for Christmas here at Umbro by sending out our Christmas cards, which you can see here. It took us a while to decide on the caption though, can you come up with anything better than our suggestions below? A hearty burst of seasonal cheer (and perhaps some football-related goodies) to the best suggestion we get…

“After Belmarsh’s captain spent 15 minutes trying to kick off using only the powers of his mind, the referee awards a free kick to Harrow.”

“Both teams waited anxiously for Shaun Wright Phillips to kick off.”

“But it was too late: the cement had dried and Terry “twinkletoes’ Woodstock was not going to have the impact he had on previous games.”

“Erm, can anyone see if that’s a head or a tails?”
