Football Archive – More Shirts!

We here at Umbro are continuing our quest to properly archive (and hopefully label) all of our past kits on flickr.

Some more have emerged recently from cupboards, and some bought in from staff personal collections.  So as always we have put them onto flickr and are currently working through trying to name them all.

If any of you have any details on any of the shirts –

home/away, year, tournament etc. or even a funny story or anecdote that you associate with a kit, please let us know by commenting on the flickr images.

Here is a small selection..

Capello T-shirts

Following on from the post on the ‘England inspired’ t-shirt accompanying the announcement of the partnership of Umbro and Fabio Capello last week, we have had a lot of people asking about the t-shirts and writing a lot of nice things about them!

Umbro Trainer Garden

Umbro

I was taking a look through flickr this weekend and stumbled across this great pic taken by Jeff Croft. I am sure this wasn’t the usage that the designers here had in mind when they created the trainers, but the picture looks great all the same! I love finding this kind of thing. If you have any pictures of umbro stuff that you have customised (or grown a plant in!!) please send it over to us!

Umbro Announces Long-Term Partnership with Fabio Capello

We are incredibly proud to announce that England’s man at the top, Fabio Capello has announced an eight-year partnership with us here at Umbro!

Fabio Capello in Charlie Allen Coat

Capello’s vision for the England team and his football philosophy are closely matched to that of what the Umbro Brand encompasses. It is his belief that if a team looks and feels confident on the pitch, their performance will be positively impacted.

“I’ve chosen to work with Umbro because they are a company full of vitality,” says Fabio Capello. “Working with Umbro means working with a team of dedicated professionals, motivated by constant research and the desire to be a leading company of the highest level.”

In this new ambassador role, Capello will continue to work closely with the Umbro brand, as he did leading up to the launch of our marvelous new kit where he played a pivotal role by providing constant input on the development and design. Capello is actually the first England manager since Alf Ramsay to have a role in the direction of the new England kit!

Capello will be wearing the Umbro Speciali boot and all relevant Umbro apparel when on England duty. This includes a cashmere coat made by the tailor who worked on the new England kit, Charlie Allen.

I hope that Mr Capello likes our ‘England inspired’ t-shirts!

Umbro England Suit T-shirt

England vs Norway Womens

Last Friday, we did a photoshoot with some of the England Women’s football team in the new Kit. At the shoot, we got five mins with Lianne Sanderson, Rachel Yankey and Casey Stoney to have a quick chat ahead of the their friendly with Norway this evening.

This is the first time we have spoken about Women’s football on the blog so it seems like a good opportunity to have a dig around for some info.

The womens European Cup finals are due to be played in Finland between August 23 and September 10 this year. Twelve teams will compete in the competition, an increase of 4 teams from 8 teams that played in previous tournaments. Finland qualified as hosts, England, Sweden, France, Germany, Denmark and Norway qualified as group winners and Iceland, Italy, Netherlands, Russia and Ukraine all qualified by winning playoffs.

A nice bit of trivia that I found is that during the 2007 World cup qualifiers, England conceded the first goal in their opening game against Austria. They then scored 29 consecutive goals, before finally conceding the last goal in their final game against France.

You can watch the game at The ProStar Stadium, Shrewsbury Town FC or live on Setanta 2 this evening at 7:45.  Check back here in the next couple of days to win the shirt that Casey signs in the movie.

We’ve been getting a really good response with teams of all ages and backgrounds entering. Here are some entries that have caught our attention…

“Our team is called Haydon United and we think that we reflect everything that is right with England and football. We have helped our Goalie deal with his anger. He came to us an angry man but with our help and love we saw him smile once..for 3.7 secs. Kieron Roger Gorman (KROG), can make ladies/attackers go weak at the knees. KROG turned down his chance to play semi-professional, preferring to play with his life-partner Matthew Tagliarini. Matt is 4 foot 2 inches. But what he lacks in size he makes up for in talent.  Much like England, size has never stopped Matt getting involved and dominating. Captain Ryan has played football in USA and represented England to the fullest, hunting Americans daring to call football, soccer. Ryan holds the red-card record for Church league and is proud of it. Haydon was created after a fall out with an old club, wanting to make a team that’s about playing football the way it should be played. Haydon isn’t just in England..Our players are England, good and  bad, united by desire to be great.”
Michael – Haydon United FC

“we are rubbish and old but all used to be very good”
Mark – Bournemouth Sports

“This band of premier league wannabes are kicked out of bed with hangovers by the senior team members every Saturday morning. And their dream of not finishing bottom of the lowest division in our county will hopefully be realised this season.”
John – Hundleton FC

Umbro Fives Update

Umbro loves five-a-side with a huge portion of us playing regularly after work. Three years ago we realised that the only thing five-a-side lacked was the ultimate dream! Something big. Something we could all aspire to and could take us from a dodgy astroturf in the wilderness all the way to Wembley’s pristine pitch.

And it is that time again – the Country’s biggest and best Five a Side Tournament is back, bigger and better than ever.

Twenty-four men’s teams and eight women’s teams will earn the chance to play at Wembley where they can expect a day like no other with the England Bus, Dressing Rooms, New Umbro Kit, Wembley Tunnel, the Royal Box and most of all a chance to play on one of the World’s most famous pitches!

However, before the glory of the Wembley finals, we have over 200 local heats involving approximately 2000 teams…which we are still recruiting for!

HOW IT WORKS…

Local qualifying heats are still very much happening around the country and will continue through into May.

Each qualifying heat will send their top teams through to one of eight regional finals, which will be contested during May and June 2009:

Teams will battle it out during the regional finals for a place in the Wembley Finals event in the summer where 24 men’s teams and 8 women’s teams will compete for the FA UMBRO Fives title on the hallowed turf of Wembley!

FEAR NOT…

Even if you don’t fancy your team’s chances to win through you still have the chance to get to Wembley through the ‘Lucky Eights’ competition. We randomly select eight teams that were eliminated in their local qualifier and invite them to Wembley to contest their own tournament.

For regular news on who is winning (and losing) the qualifiers check out the news page.

For all other info including how to enter, check out the Fives Webpage.

Return of an Old Favourite

A couple of you may have noticed in the recent England games that John Terry, David James and Phil Jagielka all wore a limited Edition Speciali to commemorate the launch of the new England home shirt.  Above is a short movie that one of our guys shot on his phone of the players reaction when they first saw thier boots.  Please excuse the quality!

The boot is modern version of our classic Speciali and was prepared in all white with the England crest on the base of the outsole. There has only been a limited amount of these produced and to ensure that these boots are maintained in the manner they deserve we’ve packaged them up with boot care items such as a brush, shoe horn and dubbing for white leather.

Speciali Box

As well as the senior players receiving the Specialis our Under 21 internationals were also given pairs to play in when they faced France. Players such as Joe Hart, Nedum Onuoha, Andrew Taylor, Michael Mancienne and Fabrice Muamba all wore the boot and initial feedback has been incredible with most of them saying it’s the best boot they’ve worn to date in their careers!!!

Good news as there’ll be more coming on Speciali very soon!!!

Gurning Winners!

We have had an unprecedented response to our facebook competition to pull your most revolting gurn. We have been really impressed by the elasticity of some of your faces and just plain disturbed by others.

Anyways, the competition has now come to a  chose and we are proud to announce the winners. For all those pictured below, a new England Shirt signed by the entire England team should be making its way to you in the post… Congratulations!
