Umbro & Millerain: a collaboration made in Manchester

Being based in Manchester, Umbro is able to draw on some of the best things in the world. Everybody knows about the music and football, but what about fabric? Manchester and the north-west was built on cotton and other fabrics, and we’ve recently collaborated with a modern brand that’s continuing the fine traditions of the region. Rochdale-based fabric experts British Millerain have worked with Umbro’s footwear department to create some very special versions of our Spinningfield footwear range.

One of the areas that Millerain specialise in is waterproof fabrics – being based here in Greater Manchester, they’ll be experts on all things rain! Their wax-coated fabrics are often used on walking jackets, but we’ve used it on our Spinningfield footwear range to create a shoe that’ll keep you comfortable in all sorts of conditions. The heavy duty uppers on these shoes are wax-coated to keep your feet dry, but they’re still canvas based so they’re don’t sacrifice any of the style or comfort of the original Spinningfield shoe.

The Millerain Spinningfield is available in two different colourways – a two-tone brown canvas and the striking blue and green check. They’re both on sale at Umbro.com now, so you can get a pair sorted for the ‘changeable’ weather we’ll no doubt be experiencing. Bad weather doesn’t have to mean bad style!

And The Winner Is… It’s Our Brits Footballers

Not sure if this is an award-winning entry, but we got there eventually! We returned to the pun arena this week inspired by the fact that its the Brit Awards next week, so we mined this particular musical niche for some pun action. Thanks to everyone who suggested their ideas, and keep an eye on both our Twitter and Facebook pages next Friday for our next theme!

Back Of The Net: the finest football things on the web this week

Umbro Canada 2012 Anthem Jacket

That’s right, two weeks in a row that we’ve managed to take a look at the finest footy-related things on the internet – if we keep up this form we might be looking at a call up to the England squad. Last weekend’s football was badly affected by the weather, particularly in the lower leagues, which is probably one of the reasons why plastic pitches have been a big talking point this week. It’s looking like we could see artificial pitches making a return to the Football League in the near future, and they’ll be a long way from the ones that were last seen at QPR, Luton and Preston in the 1980s and early 1990s (a friend of mine has a spot of Preston’s plastic pitch in his wardrobe, what a piece of memorabilia!)

Whether they’ll be as bad for slide tackling defenders, bouncing balls or the knees of veteran players is unclear, but it is a great opportunity for Who Ate All The Pies to dig up a classic picture of El Tel on the plastic pitch, and dig out this video of some action on one of the pitches as well. Where do you stand on the plastic pitch debate?

Some of the grounds that might benefit from such advances on the pitch are captured in all their glory in a fantastic picture blog over on Pitch Invasion. Entitled ‘A Year In Non-League Photos‘, it’s a world away from the grounds we see on a regular basis on TV. It’s nice to see that Umbro makes an appearance though!

Both the photoshoot above and the next site were spotted by an eagle-eyed Norwich friend of ours, who pointed them in our direction. Another photoshoot, but altogether more arty, this captures England’s female footballers in some of the places that mean the most to them. It’s great to see some of the finest female players getting the same attention as their male counterparts, so hats off to Olivia And Alison who did the shoot.

We’re obviously on a very visual feel this week, as we’re looking at a site that brings graphics to life really well. Zonal Marking have been doing this for a while, but every so often it’s handy to remind ourselves just what they do on a regular basis, to such a high standard. This analysis of some of the games this week underlines what a resource it is – in depth stuff, interesting talking points, and great visuals to bring it to life. If you don’t mention how your club could do with some more ‘llegada’, someone else will.

Finally this week, we’ve found a Tumblr that brings together two of our favourite things – Football And Music. Want to see a ridiculously large foosball table? A video of Frank Sidebottom singing a Billy Bragg medley? Football And Music is what you’ve been looking for.

San Martín: more from Peru as they showcase home and away

Universidad de San Martin Home 2012

It’s been a busy week for Umbro Peru, with three of their top teams all revealing their new kits for the 2012 season: after Universitario and Sporting Cristal, it’s the turn of Universidad de San Martín. Another team based in Peru’s capital city of Lima, San Martín have had the most recent success of the three teams we’ve been looking at, winning the Peruvian Primera Division in 2007, 2008 and 2010. They finished a respectable 4th last season, and will be looking to be amongst the teams challenging for success when the season kicks off in March.

Universidad de San Martin Away 2012

Interestingly, San Martín don’t have a regular stadium that they call home. Instead, they regular play at the grounds of other teams, including Sporting Cristal and Universitario! Obviously it’s not just great style that these teams share. The new home and away kits, in the traditional San Martín colours, follow Umbro’s Tailored ethos, with a smart look crafted from modern, lightweight and breathable fabrics.

Sporting Cristal: another stylish shirt for our Peruvian teams

Sporting Cristal 2012 Home Shirt

Following on from the new Universitario shirt that we revealed recently, another of Peru’s top teams have revealed the Tailored tops that they’ll be wearing for the 2012 season. Sporting Cristal, one of the Garra Crema‘s biggest rivals, will be wearing these smart Umbro shirts in the Peruvian Primera Division.

Sporting Cristal 2012 Home Shirt

As with all our Tailored shirts, there’s subtle details stitched into the new Sporting Cristal shirt that reference the club’s unique history. There’s the three stars above the club crest, marking the three consecutive Peruvian league titles the club won in the 1990s, and also a subtle ‘SC’ embroidered on the hem, which is a reminder of the club’s appearance in the final of the Copa Libertadores in 1997. On the backneck label, the shirt also features the Sporting Cristal motto, ‘Fuerza Celeste, Fuerza Ganadora’, a further connection between fans and players.

Sporting Cristal 2012 Home Shirt

The shirt, crafted from a comfortable, breathable material, has been designed with fit, movement and stretch in mind. In the club’s traditional sky blue and white colours, the shirt means that Sporting Cristal will be battling their Lima rivals Universitario in the style stakes this season. If we hear of any ways in which you guys can buy the shirt around the world, we’ll be sure to let you know!

Manchester Music Keeps CALM

A quick note about a great project that some of our musical friends have been involved with – Thirty One. It’s a compilation bringing together some of the finest bands from around Manchester, with all proceeds going to a very worthy cause, CALM.

The compilation brings together the likes of Murkage, The Travelling Band, Dutch Uncles and Air Cav, all bands that we’ve featured here on the Umbro blog. Not only that, but the art direction was by none other than England shirt designer Peter Saville and our friends LOVE as well, so there’s plenty of Umbro connections to this terrific project!

For more information on the record, head over to the Thirty One site.

Back Of The Net: the finest football things on the web this week

Picture from http://thefootballarchivist.tumblr.com

That’s right – like a certain ginger-haired midfielder or un striker français – Back Of The Net has come back from retirement to add firepower and a bit of pizazz to the Umbro blog, picking out some of the finest things we’ve found around the internet and presenting it to you in one handy place. We’re starting off this week with the place where we discovered that cracking picture at the top of the page, one of the growing Tumblr pages that capture some great football moments.

The Football Archivist is a Tumblr that brings together some fantastic retro football photography from all around the world. Tracing everything from the majestic to the mundane from the world of football, it’s a fantastic way to while away an afternoon at work. The picture above features some classic retro Umbro drill tops which is why we’ve chosen it, but the superb moustache on display also helps!

Visuals are also the name of the game over at On Goals Scored, a favourite here in the Umbro office – so much so that we collaborated with the man behind it on an Umbro Tee Shop tee. Creating his own visuals based on some hardcore football stats, Liam has produced a pretty unique visual style, something that’s pretty hard to do in the crowded world of football. Our current favourite is this graphic that examines what life is like for clubs once they’re promoted to the top division. It might look like someone’s gone mad with a felt-tip pen at first, but look closer and you’ll see the detail involved. There’s plenty more where this came from at the On Goals Scored site.

If you’re looking for more words to get your teeth into, then there’s a new blog devoted to all things England that should do the job. The Stiles Council easily wins the award for the best name for a new blog, and it also promises to be a pretty impressive forum for an analysis of all aspects of the England set up in the run up to this summer’s action. It’s from the same team as the now defunct Two Footed Tackle, so if you were a fan of that, you can lok forward to their particular perspective on England here.

Also known for their way with words is In Bed With Maradona, who have won a few awards for their insight and stories from around the world. They’re particularly good at stories from South America, such as this recent preview of the Copa Libertadores: now those of us who haven’t got a clue about the exotic cousin to the Champions League can impress our mates down the pub with a quick scan of the article. Cheers guys!

Finally this week we’re shining a light on a website that mixes words and visuals to terrific effect. Yes, Minoboro does have a strong Middlesbrough side to it, but it’s a gem of a site for fans of any club. The first thing you’ll notice is the cracking creative visuals of footballers both classic and modern, but there’s also some great interviews on the site. The chat with Bob Mortimer in particular is a great read – who knew that The Man With The Stick was a Boro fan?

That’s everything for this week’s internet trawl – if you spot anything you think deserves to be here next week, give us a shout in the comments section.

Umbro Footwear: new looks inspired by Manchester

Sturdy footwear is the name of the day in the winter, but you still want to look stylish – so it’s a probably quite handy that we’ve got some new styles in our 1350 footwear range available now. The style above is a brand new type of shoe that our designers have created, inspired by living and working here in Manchester. Perfect for pounding the city streets and keeping your feet comfortable in all types of weather, the Spinningfield Canvas shoes also have some nice contrasting colours to catch the eye. Available in the brown and blue colourway pictured above and the black and red colourway below, we reckon these 1350 footwear styles are perfect for all the time you spend away from the game.

We’ve also put a new spin on our first foray into footwear, the Milton. The Milton Plus now features vulcanised rubber soles for extra comfort and durability, while links to Umbro’s football heritage are referenced through the football boot-style tongue and diamond eyelets. In a black and a white and grey colourway (pictured below), the Milton Plus shoes are available through the Umbro website now.

O Canada! New shirts for the centenary

Umbro Canada 2012 Home Shirt

As they begin the celebrations around their 100th year, the Canadian Soccer Association have revealed their brand new Umbro home and away kits for 2012. The start of a whole host of events to commemorate their centenary, the new Canada shirts were launched over the weekend by Umbro Canada and the CSA. They’ll be worn by all of Canada’s national sides, such as the women’s team who have just qualified for the Olympics, and the men’s team, who are through to the next stage of qualification for the 2014 World Cup.

Umbro Canada 2012 Away Shirt

The new home and away shirts have a couple of special touches to bring players and fans closer together. Inside the collars of both shirts ‘O Canada!’ has been printed, the title of the country’s national anthem. There’s also a soundwave embroidered into the shirt, which is taken from a recording of Canadian fans singing their anthem.

Cosmos Whiteout: how a blizzard inspired our latest collection

February 5th, 1978: a blizzard hits New York that brings the city to a standstill. The city that never sleeps suddenly found itself battling against record snowfall, a white blanket wrapped around the iconic skyline. It was a tough time for the city, but it’s also a time when many New Yorkers came together to help each other out. Needless to say, the blizzard had a disruptive effect on the football fixtures at the time, but 1978 was still a good year for the New York Cosmos. The club were in the midst of their most successful period, winning the North American Soccer League for the second time and attracting record crowds.

Last year we used the iconic 1977 blackout to create a fantastic collection for the Cosmos. Now, we’re excited to reveal the Cosmos Whiteout collection, which takes that blizzard of 1978 as inspiration for another great range of Umbro gear. It’s on sale now, at the same time of year as when the snow started to fall on NYC back in 1978, and as the snow arrived in England this weekend. Funny how these things work out sometimes, isn’t it?

The Whiteout collection uses a series of subtle touches and tonal colours to tell the story of the 1978 blizzard. Splashes of yellow colour are mixed in on items like the Whiteout Anthem jacket as a reference to New York’s iconic taxis, while the jacket is crafted from a special insulated fabric so it’s perfect for the colder weather.

Reflective detailing on items such as the lettering and the crest on the Cosmos Football Jersey also help to create a sense of the city at that time, whilst adding a subtle layer of detail to the range.

Together with the Anthem jacket and football jersey, there’s also a graphic tee, drill top and taped jacket in the Cosmos Whiteout range, head over to Umbro.com now to take a closer look.
